The Hip Pocket Jazz Quintet's CD entitled Pigsaw Juzzle brings the listener a collection of tunes from straight-ahead bebop, modern swing, lush ballads, and hard-driving funk/jazz.
On this CD of all original tunes, the group's sound is defined by the tenor saxophoneand guitar leads with a rhythm section of Rhodes electric piano, upright bass, and drums. While the melodies and harmonies build on familiar idioms, they invite the listener to join in some unusual musical twists and side trips.
Hip Pocket plays straight-ahead modern jazz. The music owes a great deal to the bebop and post-bop masters, while hinting occasionally at the great fusion players as well.
The bi-fold CD case liner includes images of scanned lead sheets for all the tunes, as well as credits for the music.
